Flagging Certification Classes

Course Requirements

What are the age requirements for flagging certification?

Students must be at least 18 years old to work as a flagger in Oregon and receive a certification.

What identification do I need to bring to class?

You must bring a valid government-issued photo ID (such as a State ID Card or Driver's License) to the class.

Is previous experience required to take the flagging certification course?

No prior experience is necessary. Our course is designed for beginners and covers all essential flagging techniques and safety procedures.

Certification Details

How long is the certification valid?

The flagger certification card is valid for three years after completion.

Is this certification recognized outside of Oregon?

Yes, the Oregon flagger certification is valid in Washington, Idaho, and Montana as well.

What happens if I lose my certification card?

Replacement cards can be requested through Chemeketa Community College. You can reach them at 503-584-7310.

Course Format

How long is the flagging certification class?

Our certification course consists of one four-hour session.

Is there a test at the end of the course?

Yes, there is an open book test at the end of class. You must achieve a passing score of 80% to receive your certification.

What topics are covered in the certification course?

The course covers correct flagging techniques, traffic control procedures, safety requirements, and meets Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) construction specifications.

Scheduling and Payment

When are classes offered?

Flagging certification classes are available on weekends only, based on interest. We schedule classes based on availability and student preferences.

How do I sign up for a class?

Either send us a text at 503-272-8229 or fill out the form on our website indicating which weekend you prefer and which day (Saturday or Sunday) works best for you.

What payment methods do you accept?

We currently accept cash, credit/debit cards, PayPal, Venmo, and Cash App. A $50 deposit is due the Friday before your scheduled class, and the remaining balance is due upon arrival to class.

Do you offer group discounts?

Yes, for companies with 5 or more students, the rate is $125 per student (compared to $135 for groups of 4 or less).

Do you charge travel fees for on-site company training?

Locations over 30 minutes from downtown Portland incur a $50 travel fee, while locations over an hour away incur a $100 travel fee. There is no travel fee for locations within 30 minutes of downtown Portland.

Flaggers are in high demand for construction sites, road maintenance projects, and other workplace traffic areas. The certification is the first step toward a well-paid job with opportunities for advancement into supervisory positions, safety coordinator roles, or project management.

What is the typical pay rate for certified flaggers?

Certified entry level flaggers can earn around $37,000 to $52,000 annually based on a 40 hour work week. Overtime can increase wages between 25 and 50%. Flaggers with experience can earn even more.

Is this certification required for all flagging jobs in Oregon?

Yes, according to Oregon Department of Transportation specifications, flaggers must have completed an approved work zone traffic control flagging course within the past 3 years and possess a current certification card.

Traffic Control Plans

What types of projects require a Traffic Control Plan?
Most construction, utility work, road maintenance, special events, or any project that impacts public roadways requires a formal Traffic Control Plan. This includes work zones, lane closures, detours, and pedestrian routing changes.

What information is included in a Traffic Control Plan?
Our TCPs include detailed diagrams of the work zone, traffic flow patterns, signage placement, flagging stations, pedestrian accommodations, and specific safety measures compliant with ODOT and local municipality standards.

Pricing and Turnaround Time

What is the starting price for a Traffic Control Plan?
Our Traffic Control Plans start at $175 for basic projects. The final price depends on project complexity, size, and specific requirements.

How quickly can I receive my completed Traffic Control Plan?
Standard plans are typically completed within 48 hours of receiving all necessary project information. We also offer an expedited service with 24-hour delivery for an additional fee.

What factors affect the price of a Traffic Control Plan?
Pricing varies based on project scope, roadway type (local street vs. highway), duration of work, complexity of traffic management required, and any special accommodations needed.

Process and Requirements

What information do you need from me to create a Traffic Control Plan?
We'll need project location, work dates and duration, type of work being performed, specific roadways affected, work hours (day/night), and any special requirements from the local permitting agency.

Are your plans compliant with Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) standards?
Yes, all our Traffic Control Plans are designed to meet or exceed ODOT specifications and local municipality requirements for the Portland area and throughout Oregon.

Can you create plans for projects outside the Portland area?
Yes, we can create Traffic Control Plans for projects throughout Oregon and surrounding regions. Travel fees may apply for distant locations, similar to our training services.

Implementation and Support

Do you provide assistance with plan approval processes?
While we create compliant plans designed for smooth approval, the permit application process typically remains the responsibility of the project owner. We can make modifications to address any feedback from reviewing agencies.

What happens if project details change after the plan is completed?
We can modify your Traffic Control Plan to accommodate project changes. We include one set of minor revisions with our standard pricing. Major changes or multiple revision sets may incur additional charges.

Do you provide on-site consultation services?
Yes, we can arrange for on-site consultation to ensure proper implementation of the Traffic Control Plan. This service is quoted separately based on project location and requirements.

Do you offer Traffic Control Plans for special events?
Yes, we create specialized plans for festivals, races, farmers markets, and other events that require temporary traffic management solutions.

Can you help with temporary traffic control setup and flagging services?
Yes, in addition to creating the plans, we can refer you to certified flaggers in our network who can assist with implementing your traffic control strategy.
